The Port Arthur icon of the Most Holy Mother of God is also knowned as the icon "Feast of the Most Holy Mother of God". It was originally written for the Port Arthur naval base at the beginning the Russo-Japanese war in 1904. It was to be delivered from St Petersburg by train to Port Arthur (present day Lushun, China), but ended up in Vladivostok for about half a year. The icon was sent off again to reach its destination of Port Arthur. This time it was being transported by vessel which was heading to Shanghai. Port Arthur surrendered to the Japanese on Dec 20, 1904. The icon never arrived at Port Arthur and mysteriously disappeared, but was recently discovered in a Jerusalem antique shop on Feb 17, 1996. On May 6th, 1998 the icon returned to Vladivostok. The Vladivostok diocese has designated August 16/29 as the day of commemoration for this icon, coinciding with the feastday of the Image Not Made By Hand of our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus Christ.
