Alexandria is a great center of religious and cultural exchange between East and West both before and after the time of Christ. The catechetical school of Alexandria was considered the birthplace of systematic theology. The selected works of Origen and Clement in this volume illustrates the important developments of Christian doctrine. This volume contains Clement's Exhortation to the Greeks to give up gods for God and Christ; an exhortation To the Newly Baptized; Origen's On First Principles, etc.
Origen is not accepted as a Church Father by the Orthodox Church and his views on the doctrine of the soul and the final restoration (apokatastasis) are rejected by the Church. Clement is accepted as a Church Father by some in the Orthodox Church but his views has leanings toward Doceticism which was raised as an objection by St Photius in the 9th century. Even so, Clement and his disciple Origen are worth studying as they had considerable influence in the early Church with the catechetical school of Alexandria with its allegorical approach to interpreting Scripture and were regarded with high repute among their contemporaries of the time. Read with discretion. Translated and published by non-Orthodox.
