Commemoration List for the Departed Righteous Ones

Various online Orthodox calendar listings of saints, or menologia, have included commemorations of the repose of departed righteous ones such as Abbess Rufina of Harbin and Shanghai (Aug 15/28, 1937), Schemamonk Michael of Harbin (Dec 21/Jan 1, 1939), Schemahieromonk Ignatius of Harbin (Aug 3/16, 1958), Archbishop Simon of Shanghai and Beijing (Feb 11/24, 1933) and Blessed John (Maximovitch), Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco (Jun 19/Jul 2, 1966). Such inclusions first appeared in the St Herman Calendar. Their inclusions by the publisher were not an indication that they are saints, but a few have since been glorified as saints by various local churches, such as St John (Maximovitch). If you've seen their calendar, at the end of the list of saints, in italic letters, it includes righteous ones who have not been canonized but are well known for their holy life and struggles for God. This is so they may be commemorated at the Liturgy on their memory day, and for informing the faithful so they may pray for their souls. This same thing is done in calendars published in ROCOR as well. It was, and is, in this way that Abbess Rufina of Harbin and others are included in the calendar.

Some online calendars have not italicized such commemorations, e.g. pomog.org, while others have italicized but with no explanation, e.g. holynameabbey.org. This can lead to some ambiguity and confusion over the purpose for their inclusion. In the Russian text of the Church Calendar, they are referred to as pious people instead of saints, so ambiguity is avoided.
